A more egalitarian distribution of power and influence within the economic realm increases freedom there, in the same way that universal and equal suffrage did in the political realm." We moved to Seattle, Washington, USA in 1988 where we took positions with different social service agencies. In 1995, we both completed undergraduate degrees in political-economy. We are currently law students. Kim's area of interest is women's and children's advocacy. Ray's is sustainable development and human rights. **************************************************************** IN THIS ISSUE: 1) AN ESSAY IN EXPLICIT VIOLATION OF THE COMMUNICATIONS DECENCY ACT OF 1996 2) NAFTA UPDATE: UNITED STATES NOW IMPORTING PCB'S 3) HOTEL WORKERS IN PORTLAND FORCED TO USE REPRODUCTIVE TOXINS **************************************************************** ~--<snip>--~ **************************************************************** U.S. Now Importing PCB's from Greenpeace's Hazardous Waste Trade Usenet Group Jan 18, 1996 As a result of NAFTA the U.S. last November allowed the importation of PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls) for the purpose of incineration. The fifteen year ban was lifted November 22 for imports from Canada and January 1 for imports from Mexico. The Canadian PCB's will be shipped to S.D.Meyers' Tallmadge, Ohio "decontamination" plant. S.D.Meyers expects to make $100 million a year from this enterprise alone. The lifting of the 15 year ban was due to pressure exerted by the Ohio Congressional delegation led by John Glenn and Tom Sawyer. Canada's minister of environment - Shiela Copps - was called to task by the Clinton administration and informed that her government's ban created an unfair barrier to free trade. The Canadian government duly caved in. There are an estimated 20,000 tons of PCB's on the Mexico side ready for shipment. When informed of the lifting of the ban, PCB environmental expert, Dr. Paul Connett stated that this has "effectively destroyed" the Toxic Substances Control Act. **************************************************************** ~--<snip>--~ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ ~=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=~=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=~--~=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=~=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=~ Posted by Richard K.
