(See forwarded message below.)

I feel that people must do something to take a firm stand against the
violence being done to the people of the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Faxes to Zedillo are not enough; the people financing this violence who
have vested interests in these policies must be confronted. I strongly
feel that now is the time for broad and deep boycotts aimed at these
perpetrators of corruption and violence: boycotts, not intended simply
to "make a statement" or to "get their attention" but boycotts intended
to economically punish those responsible for the injuries done to the
people of Chiapas, and to put them out of business if possible.

My problem is that I don't know exactly whom to target. I do have an
idea, however.

Email I received in January 1995, originating from "La Mujer Obrera"
detailed what was happening then and what had been happening for many
years in Mexico, that has led to what is happening now in Chiapas.

Her message made a strong impact on me, not least because it was a plea
from poor people asking the United States to please NOT send money.

She stated that "Wall Street was demanding a military solution to the
situation in Chiapas" and that leads me to my idea.

Who is "Wall Street?" I don't know exactly. Thousands of corporations
are listed on the exchanges based there. Certainly not all of them are
responsible for the crimes being committed in Chiapas. Even if they
were, the target would be too wide and any retaliation therefore too
diluted. Maybe "Wall Street" is the big brokerage houses?

A serious boycott must be carefully aimed through knowledge.

I ask and pray that people who have this knowledge come forward with
it and help people everywhere who _want_ to be decent to _be_ decent
and not sit idly by while this evil continues.

I ask and pray that this message, or a similar one, be spread over the
internet and other media, and that the people who can help organize
the boycott(s) see it and are moved to action.

THE MASSACRE HAS STARTED....IN BACHAJON,CHIAPAS.

With these words, a few moments ago, we received information
that an armed confrontation is taking place at this time in
Bachajon, Chiapas, between the paramilitary group locally known
as "The Chinchulines" and formally known as "Youth Group" with
ties to the PRI, and indigenous from the Ejido San Jeronimo.

This paramilitary group assaulted about 300 indigenous men
and women last night, as they made their way home after a
communal assembly in San Jeronimo where the paramilitary group
lost communal elections.

This paramilitary group took over the municipality of Chilon
(a few miles from Bachajon) about 14 days ago and has kept the
civilians and human rights workers under constant verbal abuse
and threats of violence.

Neither the State nor Federal authorities have intervened in
stopping the violent actions of this paramilitary group.

At the present time, we have the confirmation of at least
one person dead and many injured. Heavily armed men have been
seen traveling by pick up truck from Chilon to Bachajon.

There is an unconfirmed report that the Church in Bachajon
belonging to the Jesuit Mission has been set on fire, we are
presently trying to confirm this but are unable to reach anyone
to do so.

This is but one more sign of the decomposition of the system
and the growing activity of the paramilitary groups in Chiapas.
If this local conflict does not have a quick political solution
it can place the Peace Dialogue in jeopardy.

This would mean a new threat of a violent confrontation at a
larger scale.

On the other hand, the Mexican Press reports today that a
vehicle belonging to MIlitary Intelligence and the Public
Security, has been following Bishop Ruiz all week very closely
and remains outside his residence.

We ask ourselves what are really the intentions of the
Mexican government?

We encourage you to send faxes to President Zedillo asking
him to intervene BRINGING ABOUT A POLITICAL SOLUTION THAT FAVORS
THE CONTINUITY OF THE PEACE TALKS.
