cyberjournal has been around for over 20 years now, and there are currently about 550 subscribers (total across yahoo, google, and riseup). Some of you have been around since the beginning, others have joined along the way, and many have left for one reason or another.
It all started because I wanted to understand how the world works, how big decisions are really made. I’ve never been able to take anyone’s answers on faith. I need to see how things work, from first principles, or else I don’t really understand. Knowing answers isn’t the same as understanding.
That’s part of the cyberjournal story. The other part is that I can’t work in isolation. I’ve got to have people who are paying attention, and even more I’ve got to have people to collaborate with. Without those things I feel there’s no meaning, no purpose – and certainly no fun – in the quest for understanding.
Thus was born the cyberjournal list. From my perspective, over the arc of the past two decades, the list has been incredibly successful. I don’t think I could have learned as much by any other means. I guess I’d call it ‘learning via conversation’.
I’m so grateful to all of you special people who have participated in this kind of conversation. Many projects have been launched out of our work together, and those too have been part of the learning process. I hope every one of you has learned something, or gotten some kind of value, out of our list.
Now I’m at a different stage of life. I understand as much as I’ll ever want to understand about ‘that stuff out there’, all that impersonal stuff about the world and how it works. At the same time, I don’t want to abandon cyberjournal. You folks have meant too much to me over the years at a personal level. So far away from old friends and family, here in Ireland, you’ve been an important community for me.
So I open it up to you. Where is your energy these days? What would you like to share with our online community? What is important to you? What would you like to talk about? What lessons have you learned from life?
warm regards to all,
