Truman, 1941 Do you have a reference for this quote? Thanks - Carl ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm sure a reader will have the answer at hand. I've received it numerous times as sigs, or in lists of quotes, or in midst of articles, etc. Certainly false rumours can be spread that way... we'll see what folks say. I saw what _purported to be an actual newspaper page with that quote in it, back in student days. A of us were studying in Europe, and went on a "Berlin tour". We took the mandatory crossing into the East -- scary! (not) -- through Checkpoint Charlie, and were hosted by a cheery group of bright East-German students who had obviously been hand picked. They began chatting us up and gently explaining how the nazis could only have come to power in a capitalist regime, etc. etc.. We thought they were absurd brainwashed automotons and just chuckled as they ranted. Our professor was clearly pleased with our sagacity. Then they showed us a room of exhibits. Lots of front pages from supposed US newspapers showing violent suppression of unions over the decades. We knew, of course, that it was all lies, forged pages. There was one statement they had circled, on a yellowed page, which was the Truman quote. _That one I didn't doubt much... made sense to me... Hitler? Stalin?... why not? rkm
