INSTEAD analysis: 1] political: your paper on Fascism looks VERY interesting, and I'll print it out today to read it. But your reader's criticism indicates the magnitude of the problem, namely that fascism is deep-rooted in Western societies, but especially in those most ardent in prosecuting war on behalf of human rights--USA and UK [and one fears in Germany too] 2] media influence: of course Herman and Chomsky have identified the problem in their classic "Manufacturing Consent", but their influence is much more insidious than most people realise. How else to account for the cognitive dissonance you encounter when people agree with all the good reasons to opposse US-NATO bombing, and then say, "but you have to do something." It's Pavlovian! The only cure is abstinence, i.e., read mainstream media sparingly and very critically, listen to radio news only if it's really important to be right up to date, and NEVER watch TV "news" which in fact is a mix of entertainment and propaganda like all TV content. Internet has now become my main source of international news. But we all need much more time for reflection and discussion [NOT between talking heads on TV]. Whenever I travel and come home having not kept up with the news, I realize that I've actually gained in understanding. 3] Deep analysis: why did US/NATO really attack Yugoslavia? The real reason is manifestly not defence of human rights--you might as well credit Hitler with that reason when you read about the propaganda about brutally persecuted Germans in Czechoslovakia that suurounded the invasion in 1938. Global hegemony through economic globalization with military intervention when nations protest too vigorously?; the need for NATO to find a new mission?; the need to test their modern weaponry?; the mineral wealth of Kosovo?; the need to teach Russia that they are really defeated?; the need to stamp outv the vestiges of communist thinking in the social democracy that Yugoslavia had become?; the need to test the new instrument of US aggression--"humanitarian intervention"? We need analysis NOT more of what the media give us WAR news! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 27 Apr 99 08:47:29 -0500 From: <•••@••.•••> To: <•••@••.••• > Subject: RE: cj#924> A request for input re/ posting topics In response to your request for possible topics of interest, two situations I am curious about are: 1. Israel/Palentine and the "Peace Process" 2. Cuba/Castro I'm a relatively new reader (2 weeks) so maybe these have already been discussed at length. Thanks! I favour the *multiple essays in one* approach as these are the most useful for those of us who are forwarding cj internationally. Another progressive service who is covering well in bulk distribution format is "Red Rock Eater News Service" out of UCLA. Specifically on Kosovo, I think the economics of funding the war needs more input as does reporting on the haneous depleted uranium weapons. I am also interested to know if US/NATO have suffered any human casualities. There are no mainstream reports on this. However, if articles are being submitted on *what else* is going on in the name of globalization, while the world is preoccupied with war is _extremely _important right now. If we realize that we are being anesticized by the contrived violence, certainly other TN agenda items are moving forward. One particular evil is embodied by Monsanto and the Terminator Seed. I have read that Monsanto will have succeeded in patenting 90% of the world's seeds in about a year from now. I am selectively doing print-outs and mailing to news media, politicians and friends not on internet as I find appropriate for the person's interests. I am very pleased with what you are doing and can only say a very big thank-you. Yes please keep posting on Yugoslavia. I've found several of your forwarded articles extremely interesting and thought-provoking, in particular "A German Insider's View" (#922) and the collection of pieces in (#921). It's hard to believe a lot of the stuff in these articles of course, but given the insanity of what's going on and the fact that whatever the truth is we're obviously being lied to by our own governments, I find myself much more patient than previously with cranky sounding conspiracy theories and extreme cynicism about the motives of the governments of the western "democracies." In particular I'd be interested in info from other sources about Bilderbergers and about the fact that *no one* is mentioning the Trepca mines (I checked NYT article about these:it has been quoted accurately and contains interesting info not mentioned in your posting about the Albanians who previously worked in these mines and who protested at the time of the break up of Yugoslavia against Serbian nationalism and in favour of a return to Titoism; I could forward this to you if you wanted it.) I also wanted to mention that on Saturday morning (April 24) on a Radio Canada program called 'The House' there was a most remarkable interview with a former Canadian ambassador to Yugoslavia; his name was something like 'James Bissonne'.He was extremely critical of the bombing and extremely negative in his prognosis. In many ways what he said was comparable to what Satish Nambiar said in your posting #919 -- but much stronger. If you could possibly get a transcript of this and post, it you'd be doing a real service especially to Canadians who are opposed to the bombing. If I manage to get a transcript I'll certainly send it to your. Finally I want to say that I originally joined your list (about a year ago) because of my interest in (real) democracy. One reason I hope you'll keep posting on Yugoslavia is that in doing so you're helping to reveal the power of the elite and the powerlessness of the people -- and so performing a great service to the cause of democracy. Please keep up the good work. Best, Forrest PS> Just discovered that the NYT article on the Stari Trg mines in Yugoslavia is available free at http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/specials/kosovo/article8.html Incidentally, it refers wrongly to Stari *Tng*. The version that I bought from the archives included a correction of this error. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Adkins, Gerald" <•••@••.•••> To: "'•••@••.•••'" <•••@••.•••> Subject: RE: cj#921> Richard Poe: The TRUTH behind the KOSOVO war - Bilder berg GOLD Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 09:25:31 -0700 Richard, thanks so much for this information - it certainly puts a different light on what our duplicitous government is up to in the Balkans. Unfortunately, like you say, it will be the "sheeple" that will pay the ultimate price. One thing I would like to say for our side. With the miracle of e-mail connecting more and more intelligent, thinking people - eventually their collective understanding will make it impossible for the corporate media giants to get away with only printing propaganda that they want us to hear. Again you have my gratitude for your illuminating article. You put it together the same way I have been; so it is good to know that there is someone else who can get past the hype. People like that are few and far between here in California. I would offer one idea. I think the term "ethnic cleansing" has to be used carefully if at all. It is really a derogatory term, and not a descriptive term; it functions at the heart of the demonization campaign that you describe so well. Indeed, all demonization has to make use of derogation in one form or another. The term was originally coined by a Bosnian journalist, sometime around 1992 or 1993. He used it once. The US propaganda machine picked it up and inflated it for all it was worth. Now all the situations to which it is applied lose their complexity, and become simplistic situations, as soon as it is applied. I would council against using it, though it should be examined and critiqued as part of opposing this horrendous war. take care, Steve Martinot ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== •••@••.••• a political discussion forum. crafted in Ireland by rkm (Richard K.
